Hardwood floors are one of the most expensive and emotionally significant elements of a home — and one of the most challenging to restore after water damage. The good news: with fast response and proper drying techniques, hardwood floors can often be saved. Here's what you need to know.
The First 24 Hours Are Critical
Hardwood begins absorbing moisture within minutes of water contact. Within 24 hours, boards start to swell and cup. After 48–72 hours, buckling and warping become severe. After 72+ hours, the wood may be permanently damaged. If you have hardwood floor water damage, call a restoration company immediately — every hour matters.
Signs Your Hardwood Can Be Saved
- Water exposure was less than 24 hours
- The water was Category 1 (clean water from a supply line)
- Boards are cupping but not severely buckled
- The subfloor is not saturated
- No mold growth has started
Specialty Drying for Hardwood Floors
Standard air movers are not sufficient for hardwood floor drying. We use specialty floor drying mats that create negative pressure beneath the floor, pulling moisture out from the subfloor and the underside of the boards. This technique, combined with dehumidification, can dry hardwood floors in place without removal in many cases.
When Hardwood Must Be Replaced
- Severe buckling or crowning that won't flatten during drying
- Category 2 or 3 contamination (gray or black water)
- Mold growth on or beneath the floor
- Subfloor damage that requires access from above
- Exposure longer than 48–72 hours
